A Transdisziplinary exploration of Vienna as a Cinematic City

Das transdisziplinäre Projekt  (Projektstart: April 2009, Projektdauer: zwei Jahre) zielt auf die wissenschaftliche Entfaltung und Registrierung der vielfältigen Beziehungen zwischen Stadt und Film. Es bezieht sich auf den weiten und bislang kaum erforschten Korpus von Avantgardefilmen und sogenannten „orphan films“ (Dokumentarfilme, Amateurfilme, Wochenschauberichte) über Wien im Archiv des Österreichischen Filmmuseums und internationaler Sammlungen (z.B. Musée Albert Kahn, Paris), die von einem Team von KulturwissenschafterInnen und KünstlerInnen einer strukturalen Analyse und Notation unterzogen werden sollen.

This project is funded by the WWTF. 

The project (project start: April 2009, duration: two years) will explore cinematic representations of Vienna - documentaries, newsreels, experimental films - alongside the question of how to define the "City" as an epistomological category. Based on rare materials from the collection of the Austrian Film Museum, Vienna's principal cinematheque, film archive and research institute, the project will develop potentials of inter-textuality and enrich the study of the Cinematic City as a site of cultural memory and as a resource for the study of micro-histories. As a transversal project, it intertwines cultural sciences (urban studies, film studies and analysis) with the practices of conceptual art.

12 x 50 diary entries from the Cycladic Sculpture Room

Over a period of daily visits to the Cycladic Room of the Museum of Cycladic and Ancient Greek Art - Goulandris Collection, a reporters notebook (50 pages, 9 x 14,8 cm) will be made of each sitting containing sketches, drawings, notes of reactions, influences and feelings following an intensive examination and engagement with the exhibited objects. The daily entries be evidence of the process of alterating perspective with regard to the exhibited objects and the intensity of the engagement with them. At the end of the working period scans of the individual drawings will be exhibited in a chronological order in the form of a diary, as a product of the process of a search.
