Die Veranstaltung „Stadtpflanzen und Taschenfilme“ widmete sich den aktuellen Themen des urbanen Gärtnerns und des revolutionären Mediums des „Pocket Films“ (mit Mobil- und Smartphone produzierte Filme). Gesamtveranstaltung: „Pocket Film“ Wettbewerb und Präsentation, Film-, Ausstellungs- und Gesprächsreihe. Sie setzte sich mit stadtökonomisch als auch sozialpolitischen Aspekten der Rückeroberung städtischer Räume durch subversive Formen des urbanen gemeinschaftlichen und interkulturellen Gärtnerns auseinander. Namhafte österreichische KünstlerInnen und FilmemacherInnen wurden zur Produktion von „Pocket Filmen“ zum Thema „Pflanzen-Geschichten“ eingeladen und ein öffentlicher Pocket Film Wettbewerb lud zum Produzieren von individuellen „Pflanzen-Geschichten“ ein. Expertengespräche und ein ausgewähltes Filmprogramm beleuchteten weiters die globale Dimension des „Urban Gardenings“.

The Project "Urban Gardening & Pocket Films..." is dedicated to the up to day themes of urban gardening and the revolutionary medium “pocket films” – films produced with mobile- and smartphones. The project consists of the “pocket film” competition and presentation, a film- and exhibition serie, and talks. The subject of the Project is  the worldwide more and more significant theme of subversive forms of urban communal, intercultural and international gardening. As a worldwide phenomenon, private people are using urban open spaces for communal gardening on their own initiative, as a creative reaction to current social and ecological problems. Renowned Austrian Artists will be invited to produce “pocket films” on the subject, and an open “pocket-film” competition motivates to film individual “plant-stories”. Talks by experts and a film programme focuses on the global dimensions of “urban gardening”.

Die Geschichte der Begegnung zwischen Mensch und Hund ist fast so alt wie die Menschheitsgeschichte. Die Ausstellung zeigt Bilder und Texte aus dem Künstlerbuch Ohrenzeugen von Hanna Schimek - erschienen 2009 bei FOTOHOF edition / Salzburg - die sich der bildlichen Darstellung des Hundes und der Beziehung des Menschen zu seinem ältesten Haustier widmen. Gleich einer  Wunderkammer des Trivialen, zeigt das HUNDmuseum hundeförmige Kuriositäten, Kitsch- und Kunstobjekte, Bilder, Schriften und Bücher. In ausgewählten Fotografien aus dem  Archiv für Alltagsfotografie Orthochrom, tritt der Hund als Begleiter, Beobachter, Zeuge, Wächter, Familienmitglied und Spielkamerad auf. Und: das sich ständig erweiternde Archiv Orthochrom begibt sich auf die Suche nach Privatfotografien...

In sämtlichen Epochen der Kunstgeschichte, in der Amateurfotografie und im Film nimmt der Hund einen singulären Platz ein und spielt eine (manchmal verborgene) Hauptrolle: als Begleiter, als Beobachter, als Beteiligter, als Zeuge, als Darsteller, als Wächter, als Spielkamerad oder als zufällig anwesender Protagonist.

Ausgehend von Hanna Schimeks neuem Buch Ohrenzeugen oder Die Hündische Komödie präsentieren das Filmmuseum und Synema zwei Programme mit raren Kurzfilmen von 1894 bis 2009 sowie ein international besetztes Symposium, das sich der bildhaften Darstellung des Hundes in unterschiedlichen Medien und Kunstsparten widmet und diverse Aspekte der Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Hund beleuchtet. Die Referent/innen, die über das „visuelle Tier“ berichten werden, stammen aus den Bereichen Kunstpraxis, Philosophie, Filmtheorie, Kunstgeschichte, Biologie und Psychoanalyse.

Die beiden Filmprogramme verfolgen das Hundesujet anhand von 30 Beispielen - und quer durch die gesamte Fülle des Kinos; vom frühen Edison-Film bis zu Uraufführungen neuer Avantgardefilme, von Propagandafilmen der 40er Jahre bis zu Werken großer auteurs wie Ermanno Olmi und Gillo Pontecorvo. In der „Montage“ dieser Werke treten neue Nachbarschaften und Bedeutungen zutage: Die privaten Hunde-Dokumente der Gebrüder Lumière treffen auf Andy Warhols Factory Diaries, die Weltkriegs-Hunde mit der Meldekapsel werden von William Wegmans Dog Baseball kommentiert, und Gustav Deutschs gefundene „Zufallshunde“ begegnen 100 Jahre später ihren Nachfahren in Vivian Ostrovskys Public Domain.

In every epoch of art history, in (amateur) photography and in film, dogs occupy a unique place and play a (sometimes hidden) lead role, whether as companion, participant, witness, actor, guard, playmate, or as a protagonist who just happens to be there. "All knowledge," wrote Franz Kafka, "the entirety of all questions and all answers are contained in dogs."

Taking the cue from Hanna Schimek's new book Earwitnesses or The Canine Comedy, the Film Museum and Synema present two programmes with rare films from 1894 to 2009 as well as an international symposium which investigates the representation of dogs across various media and art forms.

The films cover the entire spectrum of cinema: from early Edison films to new avant-garde films, from cinematic war propaganda to works of great auteurs like Ermanno Olmi and Gillo Pontecorvo. The canine subjects of films by the Lumières’ come face to face with those from Andy Warhol's Factory Diaries, Nazi messenger dogs are followed by William Wegman's Dog Baseball, and Gustav Deutsch's "coincidental dogs", excerpted from the cinema of the belle époque, encounter their descendants 100 years later in Vivian Ostrovsky's Public Domain.

Projektabwicklung und –betreuung: After Image Productions

Das Kaffeehaus ist ein traditioneller Ort der Begegnung, des Austauschs, der Information, der Unterhaltung - ein Ort für den interkulturellen Dialog. Das  C A F E   M E L A N G E, ein mobiles, interaktives Kulturcafe, das Informationen und künstlerische Positionen zum Thema "kultureller Melange" versammelt und der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich macht. Ein Container - als mobiles Kaffehaus eingerichtet - reist durch Wien. Ausgestattet mit einer sich auf der Reise ständig erweiternden Bibliothek, Videothek, Audiothek, mit künstlerischen Artefakten und Informationsmaterialien besucht und vernetzt das Kaffeehaus bestehende Zentren, Vereine, Initiativen, des interkulturellen Dialogs in Wien. In Zusammenarbeit mit diesen Einrichtungen wurden Veranstaltungen wie: interaktive Aktionen mit Jugendlichen und Kindern, Konzerte, Lesungen, Film/Videovorführungen, Diskussionsrunden organisiert, die im oder vor dem mobilen Kaffeehaus stattfanden. In Kooperation mit dem Lehrpersonal von Schulen mit integrativem Schwerpunkt wurden einzelne Veranstaltungsbeiträge mit SchülerInnen konzipiert und erarbeitet. Im Gegenzug wurden von den LehrerInnen die Materialien des Cafe Melange als Lehrmittel im Unterricht eingesetzt.

A coffeehouse is traditionally a place to meet, to exchange ideas and information, to entertain - a place for intercultural dialog. C A F E   M E L A N G E  is supposed to be a mobile, interactive cultural café where information and artistic positions on “cultural mélange” are collected and made accessible to the public. A container furnished as a mobile coffeehouse travels through Vienna.
Equipped with a constantly growing library, video library, audio library, artistic artifacts and information material it visits and connects existing centers, clubs and initiatives of intercultural dialog in Vienna.
In collaboration with these institutions events are held such as: interactive activities with adolescents and children, concerts, readings, film and video screenings, discussions which are to take place in or around the mobile coffeehouse. In cooperation with the teaching staff from various schools event contributions that focus on integration are drafted and developed together with the pupils. In return the teachers may use the materials from the Cafe Melange as teaching aids in their lessons.

LIGHT I IMAGE - The Aegina Academy is an interdisciplinary public forum; it is the artistic involvement and presentation, the scientific discourse and the interdisciplinary exchange on the following topics: Development, appearance and effect of visual and audio-visual media in the past, present and future.

LIGHT I IMAGE - The Aegina Academy is planned, organized and implemented in cooperation with topically relevant European institutions such as media classes from art academies, institutes for history and aesthetics of the media, independent and non-commercial film distributors, video and new media, centers for contemporary art etc., by a project group under the direction of AFTER IMAGE PRODUCTIONS.

LIGHT I IMAGE - The Aegina Academy always has a theme of the year, which all projects are dedicated to.

LIGHT I IMAGE I REALITY is the theme of the first academy which took place between the 9th of May and the 18th of May, 2003.

On the topic:
Appearance or being, image or reality - the essential question behind the perception and interpretation of our world was and is the starting point for philosophical discourse, for scientific research, the inventions and creations of scientists and artists since the early days of visual and audio-visual media until today and also in the future.

The first forum for art and science from 2003 was supported by the European Union as a biennial project. In 2005 the second phase of the project was realized, together with the co-organizers from Budapest and Amsterdam, in Aegina, Athens and Vienna as continuation and further development. As was the first phase of the project, the second phase of the project was dedicated to artistic contention and presentation, scientific discourse and interdisciplinary exchange on the topics of development, appearance and effect of visual and audio-visual media in the past, present and the future.

LIGHT I IMAGE I ILLUSION was an artistic and scientific discourse on questions pertaining the perception and interpretation of the world, the image of reality and the reality of the image. It was then extended by the one term that is inherent to all visual and audio-visual media: Illusion: It was about the possibilities of creating a perfect, illusionist replica of reality and the possibilities of creating fictional realities with the help of media techniques and based on preconditions set out in psychology of perception and physiology.

The motivation to develop visual and audio-visual (trick) techniques was explored and magic and sorcery as well as metaphysical or para-psychological aspects were taken into account. As was done at the first academy, this time the evolutionary history of media was analyzed as well as its current and future development. The scope of LIGHT I IMAGE I REALITY covered everything between the Camera Obscura and the digital computer interface. ILLUSION sets the bandwidth between the Laterna Magica and virtual reality simulations.

During an international symposium with many prominent participants artists and scientists presented and discussed aspects, projects, questions from a philosophical, pedagogical, media-archeological, perception-psychological etc. point of view.

Additionally to the activities in Aegina events and exhibitions took place in the Goethe Institute in Athens and the Kunsthalle in Vienna.

300 Jahre kultureller, ideologischer, politischer wechselseitiger Einfluss und wirtschaftlicher Austausch (seit der Belagerung Wiens durch die Türken unter ihrem Feldherren Karamustafa), sind der historische und soziale Hintergrund dieses Kunst-Austausch Projekts von österreichischen und türkischen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern. Den formal Rahmen bilden zwei Diplomatenkoffer, gekauft in Istanbul und Wien, gefüllt mit Artefakten (Objekten, Texten, Bildmaterialien, etc.) die sich in allen kulturgeschichtlichen Aspekten auf den gegenseitigen Einfluss beziehen. Die Aktenkoffer wurden ein Jahr lang monatlich mit der Diplomatenpost zwischen beiden Städten ausgetauscht und vor Ort in 2 Kaffeehäusern permanent ausgestellt (Kaffee Wien in Istanbul und Cafe Do-an in Wien).

300 years of cultural, ideological, political mutual influences and commercial exchange (since the siege of Vienna by the Turks, under the command of Karamustafa), are the historical and social background of this art exchange projects by Turkish and austrian artists, It formal setting consists of two diplomatic briefcasesm bought in Istanbul and Vienna, filled with various items (objects, texts, samples…), refferig in all cultural-historical respect to the mutual influence till today. The briefcases were transported by the diplomatic courier from city to city at the same time, and were permanently exhibited at the CAFÉ VIENNA in Istanbul and the CAFE DOAN and CAFÉ NIL in Vienna.
